AN ENCOUNTER WITH AN ANGEL

When you’re from a very small town and you want to move to the big city to pursue your dream, it takes a lot of guts, talent and a very strong spiritual foundation.  Even with all of these things in place, many times, you don’t make it.  I met a strong, beautiful, sweet woman while navigating the waters of the entertainment industry and always wondered why I never heard anything negative about her.  Her name is Angel Conwell and the reason is, she is a true angel. 

Angel is from a very small town in South Carolina.   She and her loving mother moved from Orangeburg to Columbia South Carolina when she was just 2 years old.  As a young girl Angel had big dreams.  In 1994, she and her mom moved out to California and in three months she got her first big job in a pilot called, “On Our Way” starring Salt and Pepa and Dave Chapelle.  Sometimes it takes a leap of faith to really make it happen and that’s just what Angel did. Soon after she was off and running, booking shows and movies consistently such as, Baby Boy, The Wash, Soul Plane, and many others. 

Even though she has done some high profile projects, Angel has never chased fame.  “I refuse to become distracted by facades.”  She has maintained that sense of core values from the beginning.  However she is fully aware that a certain amount of fame or recognition is necessary to be able to do the things that are important to her. Angel spends many hours every week feeding people in need on Skid Row and at the Los Angeles Mission.  She also works with an organization called My Friends House with the founder Tiffany Rose. They and many others spend a few hours making sure that everyone on skid row has a good meal.  “It’s such a beautiful feeling to see someone who hasn’t eaten in what could be days, get good food.”  Many of the people on Skid Row really feel blessed to encounter a true “angel” each week. 

A determined woman, Angel refuses to let the entertainment industry dictate who she is or will be in the future.  She is proud of her smooth brown skin, full lips and curvy figure.  She is also proud to be a role model and mentor to other young women who are told that they have to conform to certain standards to make it in the industry.  When asked what she is most passionate about she said, “It’s the girls that I can make an impression on and possibly change some aspect of their lives for the better and to make sure they know that there are many types of beauty.”  There are not many people in the entertainment business that have the talent, heart and passion that Angel has, but she says, “It comes from knowing where you’re from and where you’re going. I find so much comfort in knowing exactly how I’m going to accomplish my dreams and get there.”  She will not compromise her integrity or her character to take the fast track to fame and all of these young women look up to Angel and feel like she has added so much to their lives. 

From dreaming in Orangeburg, South Carolina to acting in Hollywood, California this amazing beauty has big dreams and huge plans.  With faith, hard work and persistence, Angel just keeps marching forward and has never let anyone turn her back.  She moves by faith and takes the light with her wherever she goes.
