“On the seventh day, when King Xerxes
was in high spirits from wine, he commanded the seven eunuchs who
served him… to bring
before him Queen Vashti, wearing her royal crown, in order to
display her beauty to the people and nobles, for she was lovely to
look at. “ (Esther
1:10 -11)
Queen Vashti is often given a bad reputation because of the perceived
disobedience to her husband, King Xerxes. After all he was the
king over 127 provinces and during those times he was recognized in
all the land as a demigod. She must have been a voluptuous beauty because
the king wanted to show her off to all his royal buddies. She
was perceived by all the kings’ advisors to be in absolute rebellion
when she refused to acknowledge his intoxicated bidding. The rest of
the story as history records is a sad statement to what her “beauty” got
her in to. Her crown was taken from her because the king’s posse
did not want the queen’s rebellion to be the norm for all the
women in the land, particularly their wives. Yes, the king divorced
her because she refused to grace the runway of his celebration
hall, as she was a woman of integrity. Beauty comes with responsibility
and Queen Vashti took her role as royalty seriously.
Have you ever found your beautiful self in a position where compromise
was propositioned and you refused the offer? Women, especially
in today’s
society, are asked daily to compromise their position as royalty
because of their gender. Traditionally it’s done in the boardroom
and the bedroom, simply because it’s always been that way, and
when you refuse to play the game according to the rules you are dismissed.
Well in 2010, women need to walk in the fullness of what it means
to be the queens that they are, and sometimes that means demanding
the respect they deserve.
Back in the Garden of Eden, we were more than an afterthought
by God. The Creator gave “them”, man and woman, complete
authority over the earth and everything in it. His original intent
was that the woman be an equal partner in the management of all
creation. If King Xerxes had that revelation he probably would have
thought twice about changing his marital status. If you are asked to
compromise your beauty to please someone’s traditional way of
thinking, grab your crown and show them who you really are. After all
a queen has the prerogative to say “no” if she wants to.
